About Medina Regional Hospital
Medina Regional Hospital, located on a 6.8 acre site in southeast Hondo, has been providing quality healthcare to Medina County residents since 1964. Medina Regional Hospital is licensed by the Texas Department of Health as a a Critical Access Hospital.
The roots of the hospital in Hondo can be traced back to the privately owned Medina Hospital, located at 1705 21st Street. In the early 1960’s, when the owners wanted to retire, a group of community leaders decided that a new hospital facility was needed. The concept was put to the voters of Medina County, and after an initial defeat, the construction of Medina Memorial Hospital was approved. The hospital opened in February 1964. Half of the financing for the original structure was arranged through the federal Hill-Burton Act, and the other half was from County and City funds.
Additions in 1983, 1986 and 1989 have increased service in the outpatient and emergency services departments. In 1987 the hospital’s name was changed to Medina Community Hospital.
In 2001, Medina County and the City of Hondo began discussions for the transfer of ownership to a new entity. On December 1, 2002, the assets of Medina Community Hospital were transferred to the newly established Hondo Hospital Authority. The Authority’s nine-member Board of Directors is appointed by the Hondo City Council and serves for staggered terms of two years. The current Board of Directors are: Dr. Carlton (Corky) Young, President, Steve Hackebeil, Vice-President, Lisa Rothe, Secretary/Treasurer, Rita Vance, Timotea (Tima) Barrientes, Mario Garcia and Judy Winkler.
In February 2009, with new construction completed on 35,000 square feet and renovation of an additional 30,000 square feet, the name of the hospital was changed to the Medina Regional Hospital to signify the commitment of the facility to providing services to the entire Medina County region. The mission of providing quality healthcare in a convenient location remains the same.
Medina Regional Hospital is one of the larger employers in the county, and a major contributor to the local economy, employing a total of 220 full and part-time employees with an annual payroll of $6.5 million. The Hospital and its affiliated clinics employ a variety of professionals, from physician assistants, certified health technicians, therapists and varying levels of skilled nursing staff, to hospital management, administrative support, billing specialists, clerical staff, dietary, housekeeping and maintenance personnel. The driving force behind the success of the hospital is a supportive, active medical staff consisting of six board certified family practice physicians, three surgeons, and a clinical pathologist. Medina County is fortunate to have such well-trained and dedicated healthcare professionals in all areas of operation.
