SURGICAL SERVICES AVAILABLE AT
MEDINA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL-
By Yvonne Stein, RN
Operating Room & Post Anesthesia Care Unit Manager
There are many surgical services available at Medina Community Hospital. Some of these surgeries are done as inpatients but the majority are done on an outpatient basis. This means the patient comes to the hospital the morning of surgery and goes home the same day.

Not only does MCH have a general surgeon and family practitioners that perform surgery, but also there are several specialty physicians who do surgery. Some of the specialties include ophthalmology, gynecology, podiatry, urology, plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat surgery. Ophthalmology surgeries include cataract extractions with intraocular lens implants, excision of pterygiums and glaucoma surgery. Gynecological procedures include hysterectomies, dilation and curettage of the uterus, bladder suspension, fallopian and ovarian surgeries. Podiatry includes any surgery on the feet and toes. Cystoscopies, orchiectomies, and vasectomies are procedures that the Urologist may do. Ear nose and throat surgery includes excision of nasal polyps, nasal reconstruction and the excision of skin cancers, which may include skin grafts.

The general surgeon who operates at Medina Community Hospital is Dr. Moises Soulas. “His surgical skills include surgery for appendectomy, hernia, gall bladder and breast surgery, with additional training in endoscopy, colonoscopy and other gastrointestinal and abdominal surgeries. He is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Appendectomies and gallbladder surgery may be done with a laparoscopic approach. In these procedures a telescope-like camera is inserted through a tiny incision in the abdomen and used to view the gallbladder or the appendix. Surgical instruments are inserted through other tiny incisions and the gallbladder or the appendix is removed. The advantage of laparoscopic surgery is a decrease in post–operative recovery time. These patients are often back to work in a few days.

The family practitioners perform surgeries such as cesarean sections and elective sterilization procedures. They may assist in a surgery that is performed by the general surgeon or a specialist.

A person is scheduled for surgery by their physician. They are then asked to come by the hospital a few days before their surgery to pre-register and to receive pre-operative instructions from a nurse. The nurse will obtain a short medical history and explain the surgical routine to the patient. This same nurse will likely be the Operating Room or the Recovery Room nurse. One of the advantages of having surgery at a small hospital is seeing a familiar face.
