Certified Surgical Tech (PRN)




Provides nursing care services in accordance with the policies of MHS and directives of the medical staff. Possess the ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instruction or directions. Adheres to MHS Standard Precaution policy and procedure. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Work with supervisors, other department managers and medical staff in order to provide the best patient care possible. Assists in nursing care activities for patients over 2 years of age and other services in the operating room and duties appropriate and authorized by the situation. Performs duties involved in cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing supplies and equivalent; makes deliveries to users as directed. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.


Performs delegated duties as a “scrubbed” member of the nursing team, including preparing the room, supplies, and equipment for the patient, assisting in preparing the preoperative site and draping the patient according to established procedure to provide an ample sterile field.

Carries out nursing activities required during operations pertaining to handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, and dressings in such a manner as to ensure medical surgical asepsis and safety to the patient.

Assists in cleanup of room between cases and at the end of the schedule, including bagging of soiled linens, disposing of soiled gloves and debris, transporting soiled instruments and salvaged supplies to the workroom, and washing of buckets.

Assist in the operation of electrical equipment and sterilization and/or disinfection of equipment.

Assist physician in preparing patients for, and during and after endoscopies.

Remains available to return to the hospital in case of emergency surgeries to function as scrub technician as specified by the call roster. Must remain within 30 minutes of the Hospital when on call.

Perform terminal cleaning of OR suite when environmental services is not available.

Assist in lifting and transporting patients and transporting specimens.

Transports patients from the nursing unit to the operating room and from the operating room to the recovery room as instructed.

Assist in the preparation of specimens and transporting them to a designated area.

Assists in the preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies.

Cleans soiled instruments, uses ultrasonic cleaner, checks for defective items, assembles clean instruments, and stored special items in designated areas.

Selects and transports required operative setup to rooms for specific case.

Test operational efficiency of equipment prior to and after each case and reports problems to the nurse in charge.

Sterilizes and disinfects instruments prior to procedure if necessary.

Assists in restocking of room according to established standards.

Assists in taking inventory of equipment and supplies.

Assists surgeons in the application of casts in the treatment of fractures and in holding retractors and cutting sutures.

Assembles surgeons in the application of casts in the treatment of fractures and application casts.

Assist surgeons during procedures.

Assists with the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of supplies and equipment.

Clean and disinfect equipment.

Uses chemical solution to provide high level disinfection of instruments and equipment.

Sterilizes supplies using autoclave.

Folds and assembles linens.

Stocks supplies in sterile processing, operating room, and minor procedure room.

Inventories supply levels.

Orders supplies from purchasing.

Places supplies received into the supply stock.

Brings low inventory levels to the supervisors attention.

Maintains positive and effective relationships with other departments and the Medical Staff.

Maintains open communication and problem solving atmosphere with other departments to achieve quality patient care.

Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.

Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.

Will be preceptor to new hires as requested.

Complete other duties as assigned.


High school graduate or graduate of an Operating Room Technical Program. Licensure, Registry or Certification as an Operating Room Technician preferred. BLS required within 30 days of hire.
