Medina Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of three board-certified ophthalmologists from Eye Associates of South Texas. The hospital welcomed Drs. Sharron Acosta, Joseph Kavanagh, and Scott Thomas into the Specialty Clinic 2, located at 610 31st Street in Hondo, in February 2014. These providers will offer an array of services to include:

  • Cataract surgery including advanced intraocular lens implants
  • Cornea Surgery including Pterygium excision
  • Diabetic Eye Care
  • Dry Eye & Blepharitis diagnosis and treatment
  • Eyelid Surgery including Blepharoplasty
  • Glaucoma treatment including lasers and surgery
  • Macular Degeneration including anti VEGF treatment
  • General Eye Care including glasses & contact lens exams

Dr. Acosta founded Eye Associates in 2001. Since then, the office in Seguin has grown to include 5 other locations in the South Texas area. The team from Eye Associates of South Texas comes with a wealth of experience and a commitment to provide quality healthcare locally.

As an eye physician and surgeon, Dr. Acosta offers comprehensive eye care for a wide age range. She performs cataract surgery with the new astigmatism and presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses, and laser treatment for many eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Dr. Acosta is a member of various organizations for medicine and ophthalmology including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons, and the Texas Medical Association. She also maintains her connections with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Kavanagh joined Eye Associates of South Texas in 2001. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and was Chief of Ophthalmology at the Kerrville VAMC for over ten years. During his career Dr. Kavanagh has helped train many ophthalmologists now in practice throughout the United States and is respected for his surgical skills by his patients and peers. He is known for performing no stitch, no injection, micro-incision (1/10 inch) cataract surgery, allowing patients to return to normal activities quickly. He has performed well over ten thousand cataract procedures. Dr. Kavanagh has also designed surgical instruments for Storz to improve the efficiency and safety of cataract surgery.

Dr. Thomas joined Eye Associates of South Texas in 2013. He is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who trained at the University of Colorado and has over six years’ experience in medical and surgical ophthalmology. Dr Thomas was selected for the Texas list of Super Doctors® Rising Stars™ for the last three consecutive years – an honor awarded to less than 3% of Texas ophthalmologists.
